Lone Working in Education: What You Might Be Missing

Lone working isn’t just for out-of-hours caretakers. It can include admin teams, cleaners, IT staff, or SLT staying late.

Why it matters:
Lone working is one of the most overlooked risks in schools. And the consequences, delayed response to incidents, unseen injuries can be serious.

Key questions to ask:

  • Do you have a lone working policy?
  • Are staff aware of it?
  • Are there systems in place (sign-in/out boards, check-in calls, or emergency plans)?

Simple steps to improve safety:

  • Identify lone working roles
  • Risk assess each situation
  • Train staff and share expectations
