Martyn’s Law for Schools
Martyn’s Law for Schools is a practical, plain-English guide to the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025 and what it means for your setting. Led by Sherryl Cousins, who has spent more than two decades supporting schools with health and safety, it turns new legislation into clear, manageable steps you can act on straight away.
Terrorist attacks on schools remain rare, and this course never sets out to alarm. Instead it helps you feel prepared and confident — reviewing the plans you already have, filling the gaps, and making sure staff know what to do if the worst ever happened.
Across twelve short lessons and a closing message, you’ll move from understanding the law through to building and testing a security plan that genuinely works for your school.
What you’ll cover
- What Martyn’s Law is, where it came from, and whether your school is in scope
- The Standard and Enhanced tiers, and the named roles your school needs
- Invacuation, lockdown and Run, Hide, Tell procedures explained simply
- Using the DfE’s preparedness guidance, templates and checklists
- Training your staff and testing your plans calmly and safely
- Safeguarding pupils during drills, including those who may be more vulnerable
- Communicating with parents, staff and the community without compromising security
- Carrying out a security risk assessment and building a plan that’s fit for purpose
A short knowledge check sits halfway through so you can pause and reflect on your progress, and every lesson comes with downloadable templates, checklists and trusted reference links — so you finish with a ready-to-use toolkit, not just theory.
