Fire Safety in Schools: More Than Just Drills

Fire safety is more than a tick-box exercise. It’s a living system that protects lives. But in busy schools, it’s easy for real-world readiness to slip.

Here’s what we advise schools to check every term:

Evacuation plans
Are they up to date? Are staff aware of their roles? Is it time to test them in a lunchtime drill or with SEND-specific scenarios?

Signage and equipment
Are signs visible (not covered by displays or decorations)? Are extinguishers in the right places, and checked?

Briefings for temporary or new staff
New TA starting mid-term? Cleaner covering during the holidays? Make sure they know what to do in an emergency.

A culture of awareness
Drills don’t work if no one takes them seriously. Build a culture where fire safety is practical, understood, and easy to act on.

We help schools carry out reviews, build better drills, and embed safer systems.
