Allergens

The UK has some of the highest prevalence rates of allergic conditions in the world, with over 20% of the population affected by one or more allergic disorder. (M. L. Levy, 2004)

Schools should have a policy and systems in place for managing the risk from allergens and how to deal with an emergency if it were to occur.

Template allergen policy

Schools should not have “Nut free policies” or Nut free statements as it is extremely difficult to achieve this in a school environment. For example as there are so many variables for example Christmas hamper donations may contain donated products containing nuts. The school instead can request parents provide pack lunches etc that do not contain nuts but not make the claim the school is a “nut free school”.

Instead schools should have a Allergen Policy that covers how they will manage pupils and staff with allergens and how to deal with an emergency.
